Mr. Grady A. Jenkins, Sr. age 83, of 511 W. 10th Street, Rome, GA, died Monday, March 10, 2008, afternoon in his residence.

Mr. Jenkins was born in Chattanooga, TN, on July 11, 1924, the son of the late Walter and Pearlee Harbour Jenkins. He moved to Rome as a small child. Mr. Jenkins attended the University of Georgia where he was a cheerleader and a lifelong Bulldog fan, and received his Associates Degree in Psychology from Floyd College. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy. While in the Navy he served on several different ships and barely escaped with his life from two sinking ships, The USS Lexington and the USS Little. Mr. Jenkins was a member of the West Rome Baptist Church for approximately 50 years, serving as a Youth Leader and teaching Vacation Bible School. For the past 3 years he had attended the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Prior to retirement in 1986 he was associated with Georgia Kraft for 30 years. Mr. Jenkins was also a justice of the Peace. He loved to travel with his wife, often making trips to the beach or out west. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Louise Lowe Jenkins. Also preceding him in death was a son, Grady Alton Jenkins, Jr., a grandson, Kevin Jenkins, and two brothers, Walter Jenkins, Jr., and J.W. Jenkins.

Mr. Jenkins is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Gordon Whittington of Marietta, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Lee and Cheryl Jenkins of Rome; six grandchildren, Michael “Taekil” Jenkins, “Katie” Katharina Jenkins, Micah “Luan” Jenkins, Kay Myers, Andrew L. Jenkins and Staff Sgt. Jason Dallas Kelly. Nine great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Jenkins will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon at 1 PM in the Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ken McKenzie and Rev. Ken Oates officiating. On Wednesday Mr. Jenkins be carried to the church to lie in-state from 12 noon until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery with the Honor Guard from the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion conferring military graveside rites.

The family received friends Tuesday evening in Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are asked to meet at the church by 12:30 p.m. and include Taekil Jenkins, Staff Sgt. Jason Kelly, Frank Durden, Rick Hollingsworth, Corey Myers, Walter Jenkins, Luan Jenkins and Bruce Nicholson.
