Steward O. Mitchell, age 98 of Highland, IL, died Friday, September 16, 2016, at Highland, IL.

He was born on Tuesday, December 11, 1917, in Litchfield, IL, the son of Clarence and Belle (nee Hoover) Mitchell.

He married Mary M. Mitchell, nee Gregory, Dec. 1950 at Walnut Grove, AR, who passed away on Friday, March 16, 2012.

He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL; United Auto Workers Local #31 at Kansas City, Kansas; VFW Post #5694, Highland, IL; Lee Iten Post #439-American Legion, Highland, IL; former member Masonic Orders.

Steward was born near Litchfield, IL; at age 12 moved to West Alton, Missouri. He served with the US Navy during WWII; May 4, 1945, 85 miles north of Okinawa, the ship he was on, the USS Little, was destroyed by Kamikazes. He survived and received the Purple Heart; he also had received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon. He worked construction for 20 years and worked in the maintenance department at General Motors for 20 years. He retired in 1980. Mr. Mitchell lived in Mexico, MO, until 1988, when he moved to Highland. He enjoyed walking, collecting knives and coins.

Father – Clarence Osman Mitchell (died 2/2/1975)
Mother – Belle Mitchell (nee Hoover) (died 5/24/1990)
Wife – Mary M Mitchell (nee Gregory) (died 3/16/2012)
Brother – Archibald Hoover Mitchell (died 8/2/2004)
Brother – Theodore Russell Mitchell, West Alton (died 1/12/2011)
Sister – Virginia Lee Fahrig (died 1/24/2000).

Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL and from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL., with Rev. Christopher W. Hill, Senior Pastor, Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, IL, officiating.

Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery in Highland, IL.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice or Evangelical United Church of Christ.
